To give an idea of why I suddenly decided to combine my photography with a vote-devouring ballot box, I will briefly sketch where I come from.
Growing up in the Frisian countryside, I was able to play outside a great deal in the surrounding meadows at a young age. This landscape, which now seems rather unremarkable to me after seeing something of the world, still holds a nostalgic sense of adventure.
The wide horizon often held spectacular clouds, colourful sunrises or sunsets, and clear starry skies that made you feel you were in another world. These are images we all know so well from painting: Rembrandt, but also Turner and many others recognised this quality.
When I found myself in Dartmoor, England, I experienced this again for the first time in years, since I had been in Oklahoma, USA. My view has become contaminated by local politics: conservative and, above all, out of touch with the world.
That adventurous drive is missing in many of those who grew up alongside me. They complain that they are not heard, but they do not go out to share their voice with the world either.
